Bigpoint has announced plans to release a browser-based “tactical space combat and adventure” MMO based on Battlestar Galactica this autumn.
Battlestar Galactica Online will be playable on Syfy.com for a 30-day trial period, during which players will sign up as a human or Cylon, and is based on the Unity engine.
“For the first time ever, we’re relying completely on Unity in order to offer our users fantastic game graphics right in their browsers,” Bigpoint CEO Heiko Hubertz said.

40K MMO dev notes “steady pattern”.
The MMO market is still very similar to the days before World of Warcraft according to Vigil Games creative director Joe Madureira.
“A lot of people have entered the fray and failed miserably, but I don’t think that core of the way MMOs play, or the business model in general – for the most successful ones – it really hasn’t changed that much. At least not in the US,” Madureira told our trade-only sister site GamesIndustry.biz.
Madureira’s Vigil Games is currently working on a Warhammer 40,000 MMO for publisher THQ.

A regular topic at HQ, says Brack.
Blizzard has said World of Warcraft heading to consoles is “unlikely” – a line we’ve heard almost annually since WOW-time began.
Producer J. Allen Brack decapitated this year’s hope-head after wheeling out a familiar cart of reasons why not: console lifecycle, patch flexibility, keyboard design – pretty much the same reasons Paul Sams outlined to Eurogamer in 2006.
“It’s unlikely that WOW comes to the consoles,” Brack told G4TV.

Plus new skills for every class.
NCsoft has revealed what we can expect from the next major update to its MMO Aion.
A significant overhaul of all the character classes, improvements to questing and a faster rate of experience gain – perhaps answering the complaints of many that the game is too “grindy” – are the order of the day.
Every class gets new skills, including skills for countering stun attacks.

Blizzard behemoth not untouchable.
Activision has made a worrying risk assessment of World of Warcraft, claiming the MMO giant could be toppled – rendered “obsolete” – by the emerging social gaming scene.
“We also compete with other forms of interactive entertainment,” said Activision in its 10-K annual report, “such as casual games like iPhone applications and other mobile phone games, and games developed for use by consumers on social networking sites.
“Future increased consumer acceptance and increases in the availability of such games or other online games, or technological advances in online game software or the Internet, could result in a decline in platform-based software and negatively impact sales of our console and hand-held products.

Still “pleased” with Tabula Rasa, though.
Ultima Online and Tabula Rasa creator Richard Garriott has explained that his hit-to-miss ratio is about 50:50.
“Just for the record with Tabula Rasa and other games: I have about a 50:50 hit/miss ratio with the publication of all my games,” the developer-cum-space-explorer told GamesIndustry.biz.
“And by the way I think 50:50 is mighty good – so although Tabula Rasa didn’t find a sufficiently big audience for NCsoft to wish to continue it, I’m actually still very pleased with a lot of the innovations we brought to bear on the game, and I think there’s a lot of ways in which it succeeded to at least the design vision we were attempting.
