US Wii sales have topped 30 million since launching in November 2006, making it “the fastest-selling console in the history of the industry”, according to Nintendo.
The platform holder said that the milestone was reached in 45 months, 15 months quicker than the next bestselling console.

Nintendo has posted a loss of 25.2 billion yen ($288.4m / £184.3m) for its fiscal first quarter ended June 30, compared to a profit of 42.3 billion yen a year earlier.
Sales fell 25.6 per cent year-over-year to 188.6 billion yen ($2.16b / £1.4b), while operating income declined 42.2 per cent to 23.3 billion yen ($266.5m / £171m).
“Appreciation of the yen and the lowering of the price of Nintendo DS hardware in Japan and Europe adversely impacted net sales and operating income,” the company said in a statement.

The Hague District Court has convicted 11 retailers of acting unlawfully by trading in DS R4 cards and Wii mod chips.
The retailers unsuccessfully argued that Nintendo was attempting to stifle competition, MCV reports.
“Nintendo protects its intellectual property rights globally and takes action to prevent the distribution of pirated software and devices that allow illegally downloaded software to be played,” the platform holder said in a statement.

Microsoft has suggested that Kinect offers greater value for money than Sony’s Move or Nintendo’s Wii.
“We researched it heavily,” Chris Lewis, VP of Microsoft Europe’s Interactive Entertainment Business, told MCV. “As with most things, we do massive amounts of consumer research. Not only did we consult with people like yourselves, but also the analyst community. We think this is great value.

Nintendo UK general manager David Yarnton has acknowledged that demand for current generation consoles has "declined" after a few “very good years”
While the company isn’t happy about the situation, the executive told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that there are still “plenty of opportunity” to reach new audiences, and said that innovations like 3DS will drive consumer interest.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has said that the company is actively planning to expand its digital distribution business, despite mixed results in the area to date.
Speaking during the firm’s 70th annual general meeting of shareholders late last month, the executive said DS and Wii consumers haven’t been buying as many products online as Nintendo would like.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has claimed that the company is unconcerned by increased sales momentum for rival consoles as Wii adoption experiences a slowdown.
Nintendo sold 20.53 million Wiis in the financial year ended March 31, 2010, and expects sales of the console to fall to 18 million units during the current year. Nevertheless, Fils-Aime thinks the system will continue to widen the sales advantage it currently holds over PS3 and Xbox 360.
